And Peter Carmine Gaetano Napolitano, the bartender at the Melody Lanes bowling alley in south Brooklyn, wearing suspenders and a red-trimmed cummerbund, “an insurance policy for pants.”

About the Author

Michael Brick, a senior writer for the Houston Chronicle, is the author of Saving the School: The True Story of a Principal, a Teacher, a Coach, a Bunch of Kids and a Year in the Crosshairs of Education Reform, a narrative nonfiction account of the effort to restore a troubled high school to its place as the heart of an inner city neighborhood in Texas. He is also the author of The Big Race, the story of a transcontinental motorcycle rally.

His feature stories have appeared in Harper’s, The New Republic, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated. He previously worked as a reporter and sportswriter at The New York Times, where his assignments included the construction of Torre Mayor in Mexico City , the collapse of Enron, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, summer in a bar on Coney Island and a yearlong series on adventure sports.

Brick, who lived with his wife and children in Austin, died February 8, 2016, from colon cancer. He was 41.

Very useful and very well written.

This 1963 book is much more useful than I had expected. The subject area is broader than the title suggests. I've found it immediately useful for Archimedean totally ordered groups and rings for example.

The subject of general ordered algebraic systems is not much written about, in my experience so far anyway. And yet this book, "Partially Ordered Algebraic Systems" goes beyond total order to general partial orders (particularly lattices) on algebraic systems including groups, rings, fields and even semigroups! When I ordered the book, I was not optimistic that it would be useful. But the first thing I looked up was fully covered with all of the information that I wanted. Specifically, that was Hölder's theorem for Archimedean totally ordered groups, pages 45-46. (The author calls totally ordered sets "fully ordered".) There's a full, clear proof of this theorem, plus the motivation, context and applications. (I immediately added the reference to the wikipedia article on this subject.)

The topic coverage of this book is clearly visible in the Amazon preview. So I don't need to tell you what it covers. I will just say that I'm very happy with it, it fills a significant gap in my collection of algebra textbooks, it's well bound and well printed, and well written. I wish all algebra books were so clearly written. This subject area of algebra is not covered (apart from extremely brief peripheral mentions) in the big standard algebra textbooks by Mac Lane and Birkhoff, and by Serge Lang, for example.

It is quite intriguing how order interacts with algebraic structures. Order puts quite strong constraints on the properties of addition and multiplication operations. The Hölder theorem is just one example of this.

Audubon field guide for Hawaii

This book will give you a basic idea of birds to be found in Hawaii and the pictures are good. However, it does not include pictures of female , juvenile or birds in non-breeding plumage or in most cases even give written descriptions of how juvenile and females differ in appearance from male birds. I found this very frustrating as I saw birds which did not fit any of the given pictures and had no way to figure out what they were. Anyone who is a serious birder like I am will be unhappy with this book and amateur birders are going to be left wondering why they can't identify some of the birds they see.

A 2005 edition is available

Here's my review of the 2005 (6th) edition.

+ Easier to use than previous edition, better photos and color register
- Some photos omitted from previous edition were helpful for identification, still some disorganization

This new edition is a great improvement over the 5th. Entries cover 141 species and subspecies. Birds are still organized by habitat, but page headers and color coding make finding a bird much quicker, which is useful for field identification. Symbols showing endemic, indigenous, alien, visitor, and endangered species are clearer. The endemic bird list and distribution maps have been updated, as have references and descriptions (for example, this edition notes the split of the African Silverbill [Lonchura cantans] from the Warbling Silverbill [Lonchura malabarica]). Each entry includes 1-2 photos (many of higher quality than in thge previous edition), the common name, Hawaiian name, genus and species (plus subspecies where relevant), distribution, description, voice, and habits. The "voice" and "habits" sections are especially helpful for differentiating between birds of similar habitat and appearance. A collection of island maps in the back provide a quick reference for common birds.

Although the color-coded tabs make the book much more usable, it's still not clear what determined the order in which birds appear within each section. It is the same as in the 5th edition and is not alphabetical by common name, Hawaiian name, or genus; it also is not in order of relative frequency. While I appreciate most of the new photos, and particulatly those of juveniles, some omissions are puzzling. For example, the 5th edition had a nice photo of a White-tailed Tropicbird from above, showing the black markings on its wings that help differentiate it from the Red-tailed Tropicbird when it is at a distance and the tail color can't be seen. This was especially useful since viewing opportunities at Kilauea Point and Waimea Canyon are often fom overhead and at a distance. The 5th edition also included a facing page photo of an immature Red-tailed Tropicbird, illustrating the description of "heavy black barring on upperparts" (5th ed., p. 16). This photo is omitted from the 6th edition. Thus, there is now a notation of the juvenile Red-tail's "heavy black barring" and the adult White-tail's "black marks on wings and back" but no photo of either to guide the reader. Since the text notes that a third species, the Red-billed Tropicbird, has recently been seen at Kiluea Point, and that it has "heavily barred upperparts," the identification is muddier still for those not already familiar with the three species.

If I were in charge of the the 7th edition, I would organize each section by main color or by most-to-least common, include a photo of an immature bird when this aids differentiation, include a colored notation by each bird identifying the islands on which it is found (to supplement the text and the endemic checklist in the back), and move birds presumed to be extinct or exceptionally rare to a new section.

This field guide is useful for quick identifications of the expected birds; less so for visitors. It has the virtue of large photos and is small enough to carry easily. For more comprehensive coverage, spring the $45 for Pratt et al.'s A Field Guide to the Birds of Hawaii and the Tropical Pacific. Yes, it's woefully out of date (it was last revised in 1987), but it provides illustrations of juvenieles and adults of both sexes, side-by-side species, and a broader geographic range. Pratt's newer Enjoying Birds and Other Wildlife in Hawai'i (revised 2002) is light on bird photos but heavy on viewing sites, species lists, and information. It includes military bases and atolls; you can't get there from here but it's still interesting to know. It could be heavier on "other wildlife" (a 4-page sop rather than a real focus; on my last trip I saw butterflies, other insects, an amphibian, a reptile, and a nice big spider that aren't represented here).

Of the 141 birds represented in the Audubon book, we saw 40-41 (one identification still pending) in 4 days this month, one at the airport on O'ahu, the others on Kaua'i at Kilauea Point NWR, Hanalei NWR, Waimea Canyon SP, Koke'e SP, Alaka'i Wilderness and along the Kuhio and Kaumuali'i highways, as well as outside the hotel.

Born and raised in Concord, Massachusetts, he interrupted his career as an advertising salesman to appear on the quiz show Tic-Tac-Dough in 1958. With his $42,000 in winnings—a record-breaking amount at the time—Craig enrolled at Columbia University and earned both an undergraduate and a master’s degree in history. He published his first book, The Fall of Japan, in 1967. A narrative history of the final weeks of World War II in the Pacific, it reached the top ten on the New York Times bestseller list and was deemed “virtually flawless” by the New York Times Book Review. In order to write Enemy at the Gates (1973), a documentary account of the Battle of Stalingrad, Craig travelled to three continents and interviewed hundreds of military and civilian survivors. Will former Nazis rise to power once more? Grab a sub, a drink, hide the phone and settle in for one astonishing read!

Join CIA agent Corcoran as he unravels a plot to place those Nazis that escaped decades ago following the end of World War II back in power in Germany.

Sent to Germany to investigate the possibility of a Soviet buildup prior to a possible invasion of Western Europe, Corcoran gets in touch with his old friend, Soviet KGB agent, Glasnov, and as the suspense and tension builds in this superb thriller, as the secret bunker with Willie Brandt and most of the other top leaders is about to blow, pages begin flying, fingernails bitten until the last incredible page.

Grab a sub, a drink, hide the phone and settle in for one astonishing read!

Interesting enough thriller.

A Net Galley book and an interesting enough thriller with Espionage undertones, without being the best book ever.

It is the mid-70s and some sleeper Nazis have decided the time is right to overthrow Willy Brandt’s government and instigate the Fourth Reich. Plans that have been 30-plus years in the making. Matt Corcoran is the American agent, trying to join all the dots up and with the assistance of an adversary-cum-friend in Russian intelligence thwart the plan – once of course he has realised what is going on.
There’s misinformation and red herrings aplenty – why are the Russian’s ramping up the Cold War with troop movements towards the West? Is it Baader-Meinhof Gang raiding American arms depots in Germany? Why now are the Arabs instigating an oil-shortage which could cripple an Allied response to Russian aggression, or is it all part of a bigger smokescreen?

Interesting plot, though I don’t know too much about the time period to offer a considered response as to whether it was all plausible, though the author does a convincing job in persuading me. Could the Nazis have made a comeback? Would the civilised world have tolerated them?

Not too much depth to our characters, which in this instance was quite good because it kept things hurrying along. Enough there to ensure the main characters were more than brush-strokes but insufficient to allow for any feelings of fellowship from this reader, for the good guys. That said, only brush strokes or not – who doesn’t find Fascism and Nazis odious.

Overall a fairly quick read in a month where my reading has slowed up. Interesting and a bit of food for thought on a “what if” basis, but I wouldn’t especially rush to read anything else by the author.

A great book for Miata enthusiasts!

This is not a book about how to buy, restore and sell Miatas, but rather a fantastic book on the experiences that the author had buying, restoring and selling them. I just recently got the Miata bug, and when I read a few sample pages on Amazon, I knew I had to read it. The book does a great job of telling you the ups and the downs of what it is like to buy a Miata, fix it up and sell it. She is quick to point out not to quit your day job, but despite the hard work, it can be fun and profitable when done right. Anyone who is a car person will completely enjoy this book.

Very misleading - not worth the money

I bought the book thinking Ms. Davis would provide some guidance on restoring Miatas. NO SO. Ms. Davis describes each Miata she purchased, where she went to pick it up (detailed driving route in California), what the seller was wearing, what they ate returning home with the purchased Miata, etc., etc, etc. BORING and SELF SERVING

Enjoyable, but no real substance

A fun, very light read with no real information contained within. She sounds like a nice, fun lady who found a way to spend her days surrounded by Miatas. I'm not sorry I bought the kindle book, but would have been upset if I'd paid for the hardcover.

Coherent, Concise, and Challenging

For those of us who were fascinated by Feynman's presentation of the vector potential field A, this book is irresistable. Mead tries to build the foundations of electricity and magnetism anew, and does a fascinating job of it.

There is a lot of history and historiography mixed in with this short book, but I myself find that fascinating. If you're interested in how the currents of thought might have eddied, or where key suggestions were missed, or what from Einstein may have been underappreciated, you'll enjoy this side of the book.

All that said, this book is chewy, and does only a mild amount of hand-holding in walking through the math. This is NOT anybody's first book of mathematical physics - but if you have enjoyed reading books by (e.g.) Feynmann, Misner/Thorne/Wheeler, Herb Kroemer, Andy Grove, Morse/Feshbach, Francon, Ichimaru, Khinchin, Papoulis, Polya, Sapriel, or Wiener, you're part of the natural audience for this book. If you liked "The Elegant Universe" you may love this book (and find some common themes), but this book is more mathematically demanding. On the other hand this is no mere tome, and does not require more than undergraduate competence.

I would have liked to see more visualization aids - some of the concepts in this formulation lend themselves very well to a visual presentation. I'm going to be rereading this book, and I'm really looking forward to expository textbooks which may follow this line of presentation.

If you're in doubt, buy this - it's challenging, but very broad and brilliant, and is not only about electrodynamics.

Food for thought

This is a fascinating book. Dr. Mead attempts to rethink electrodynamics, assuming that fields have no existence independent of the particles that generate them -- thus, electromagnetic effects act "at a distance" along lines of zero interval in 4-space. One of the most interesting tidbits is the treatment of a "quantum transition" as the nonlinear interaction of two dipoles. It is difficult to put aside a lifetime's training in picturing electric and magnetic fields, and I'm divided on whether the approach is really superior to the conventional method, but it's certainly fun to think about.

Disappointing contents in grandiose package

This book has an exciting and promising title and it starts with an interesting discussion about how Feynman and other great physicists inspired the author. One therefore starts reading with great expectations. Unfortunately these are soon gone. There is no coherent exposition of electromagnetism to be found in the book. A few specific areas are treated in an original but non-convincing way. The author conveys some scattered insights but does not produce anything useful in the way of a new and better theory of electromagnetism.
I happen to agree with the author that the vector potential is an important concept which perhaps sometimes is not given the full attention it deserves in some texts, but that is about it. I cannot recommend the book as textbook on any level of education. As an historical document it might have some interest. The author says that Feynman smiled in an embarassed way when he told him that he was the reason he had gone into physics. I now understand why Feynman was embarassed: Carver Mead may be a brilliant inventor and engineer but he does not have a clue as to what one would mean by "foundations of electromagnetism" in the way Feynman would have understood these words.

Bad presentation

I was very excited to find a book that was going to give me more ideas on how to pick stocks using IBD. While this book did give information on IBD, it never got into anything I found helpful in really using to pick stocks. All the author did was present information I already knew by reading IBD myself. Also this was not a pure IBD product the author attempted to mix in several authors advice and techniques into this work by quoting them verbatim. The book was very dry and hard to read and I do not think beginners or veteran traders will find it helpful. It was written by a doctor, who may be a great trader, but I did not like his writing style. I would advise reading all of William O'Neal's book and stick with IBD alone to teach you. Long Winded-But Necessary

If you are totally new to investing then you should start with "24 Essential Lessons to Investment Success" & "How to make Money in stocks", both by William O'Neil. If after reading those books part of the Investment Business Daily newspaper makes no sense, I recommend this book. Once you feel successful and comfortable in the stocks you pick, you would want to understand the whole picture. Though this book will confuse you in the beginning and I agree with many of the reviews, remember it is a brake down of the newpaper and how you can use each part of it to understand everything of the market and how Investment Business Daily feeds you that information. I strongly recommend it. Puts together the Big Market picture from the pages of the Investors Business Daily paper. It should glue together some loose ends.

For those who enjoy William O'Neil's newspaper INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY and his book HOW TO MAKE MONEY IN STOCKS, INVESTING SMART is a worthwhile book. In short, this volume is a clearly written, well organized introduction of how to use IBD in stock picking. My guess is that the book was written for those who do not know too much about the newspaper; frequent readers who already fully utilize IBD's wealth of information will probably not find much here. Even so, this book still might be valuable to them as a refresher course. The only gripe I had was that the book largely seemed like a watered-down version of CANSLIM, O'Neil's renowned system to finding winning stocks. Those looking for innovative approachs to using IBD's material, hence, may be disappointed. For them, this book might have value anyway as a useful supplement to one of the best stock-trading systems in existence.
