Of the many Aromatherapy books I have ... none can compete or compare to this one!

More than a 10 star book! So much valuable information shared in a simple format, accurate and easy to understand even for a beginner. As a nurse, aromatherapist, and energy healer, I especially loved its comprehensive layout of the essential oils and the body systems. For example it lists for each essential oil: synonyms, family, botany/origin, method of extraction, characteristics, history/traditional use, chemical composition, pharmacology/clinical studies, therapeutic actions, indications (body systems), energetics, personality profile, mode of application, and safety tips! Can anyone ask for more??? For what this book has given me over the years and continues to provide, I would say it's worth twice the amount of money I spent. I purchased it when recommended for my year long study through The Institute of Traditional Herbal Medicine and Aromatherapy, principally taught by Gabriel Mojay, Author of Aromatherapy for the Spirit, and other notable experts. I recommend this book more than highly! And even for someone not deeply into using essential oils there is a wealth of basic medical information covering major body systems that can help a person get to know how their own body works so they can begin to heal.

A giant, comprehensive, and very worthwhile book on aromatherapy.

I had already collected an excellent set of aromatherapy books, and so was reluctant to pay $89 for this one.

But after receiving it, I'm very glad that I did.

The author integrates the perspectives of many of the top experts in the field, complete with references, and includes tables showing the varying constituents of different varieties of the same oils (e.g. the three main types of basil), and covers topics like absorption, specific body systems, and even setting up an aromatherapy practice in more detail than any other books I own.

His description of each oil is amazingly extensive and valuable.

Clearly, this 600 page tome is a labor of love and much effort, too.

Wow.... this book is worth the money when it comes to Aromatherapy. Just like the title says, it is a complete reference on the topic. If there is one book to get, this is it. Buy this book!!

Cabrera is the best!

If your looking for a book on the afro-cuban religions, this is possibly the best one written. Cuban anthropologist Lydia Cabrera has written one of the best books on the subject. She discusses the myths, rituals and history of the religions derived from the congo and from the yoruba people who were brought as slaves into Cuba. In addition, Cabrera's text has a mamomth dictionary of various herbs, fruits, and vegetables, explaining who their spiritual owner is in addition to what the item can be used for. Cabrera also discusses the secret society of the Nanigos. It's a shame that this text has yet to be translated into English as it deserves to have a wider audience. Nonetheless, if you can read in spanish and are interested in this subject, this is definately a book to buy!

Lydia's books are all very nice when it comes to the explanation of things and their history.

As a notice to the readers of Afro-Cuban Religion books;

Take the readings only as theory since the practice varies greatly amongst the branches of the religions. You have to be iniciated in, Palo, Santo, Ifa, or Abakua to learn the real secrets, so don't expect to read them on a book. Some of the authors present you with too much information, like actual rituals and the making of talismans...Don't do it, as it is disrespectful to the dieties, and to the practioners, not to mentention the bad consecuences which your curiosity might bring upon you.

So read on for educational purposes and don't allow your curiosity to get you in trouble :) .

I also recomend any of the books by Natalia Bolívar Aróstegui, an excellent writer in the field and having met her in person I can tell you that she's very dedicated.

This is the way to write and read history

This is the way to write (and read) history. Morris gives us silly, sad and wonderful tales of real people whose characters enliven the shadow of Britain as cast across the world stage, lengthening as year succeeds to year.

This is the first of three volumes that cover the reign of Queen Victoria. We are treated to all of the stories of Empire, as the soldiers and sailors of the Queen spread out across the globe to forge a truly global sphere of influence.

History need not be dull, and Morris is proof. This and the other volumes in the trilogy are outstandingly fascinating. We are anywhere that the Sun Never Sets, among some of the most creative and eccentric people imaginable.

The entire trilogy is well worth your time and attention.

Best condensed narrative of the British Empire under Victoria

I thoroughly enjoyed Jan Morris' survey of the 19th century British Empire. Having studied this topic from numerous other sources and perspectives, I still found this to be a refreshing account, and one that tied numerous facets into a cohesive whole. While some might regard Morris as writing with too much of a pro-British bias, I did not find the lack of politically-correct 'empire-bashing' to be problematic. Indeed, Morris emphasizes the negative (and the ludicrous) right alongside the positive. In the few instances where the perspective is obviously skewed, the informed student of history can easily read between the lines. In short, for the curious, I recommend this as the finest single volume on this topic, both for its informative content and its exciting, engaging writing style. I look forward to reading more of Morris' works.

Fascinating!

I gave this 6 CD set a 5 star rating for its easy-flowing, fact-packed and totally informative content. I was never bored for an instant, though I was disappointed that it ended when it did, before the end of the century, but I knew that this was one of a trilogy. The writer, and reader, brings to life the many colourful and quite incredible personalities that appeared to abound in those days. There was also no bias towards imperialism, and indeed, at times, clearly made the case against it, such as his portrayal of Gladstone and his opinion. A great work for anyone interested in history of this period.

Jim Whiting's biography of Yo-Yo Ma is a MUST ITEM for children's library departments everywhere! Although the book has been written for children, it would be valuable to adults who are fans of Yo-Yo Ma. Mr. Whiting includes an impressive bibliography and the index, in itself, makes for a fascinating read.

About the Author

Sara Gorman, PhD, MPH, is a public health specialist at a large multinational healthcare company, where she works on global mental health, increasing the quality of evidence in the global health field, and alternative funding models for global health. She has written extensively about global health, HIV/AIDS policy, and women's health, among other topics, for a variety of health and medical journals, including PLoS Medicine, the International Journal of Women's Health, and AIDS Care. She has worked in the policy division at the HIV Law Project and as a researcher at the Epidemiology Department at Harvard School of Public Health. She has also analyzed mental health policy under the ACA for the Vera Institute of Justice and researched the effectiveness of semi-mobile HIV clinics in rural Kenya for HealthRight International.

Jack M. Gorman, MD, is CEO and Chief Scientific Officer of Franklin Behavioral Health Consultants. Dr. Gorman was on the faculty of Columbia University's Department of Psychiatry for 25 years, eventually serving as Lieber Professor of Psychiatry. He then became the Esther and Joseph Klingenstein Professor and Chair of Psychiatry and Professor of Neuroscience at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Fascinating Book

Why would bright people lead their lives in ways that are exactly opposite to the ways that are proven scientifically? Denying to the Grave is a wonderful book that explores reasons behind such behavior. For example, 2 of the reasons are the “following of a charismatic leader” and a “fear of conspiracy by government and corporations.” The traditional approach of providing more data will obviously not work in light of such reasons and the authors suggest innovative ways of convincing people to do the right thing. It is a fascinating read.

Hungarian origins prior to the 9th century has been embroiled between eastern and western views of where each thinks Hungarian origins may be found. The prevailing view is that Hungarian (or Magyar) origins are to be found east of the Ural Mountains as part of an east to west migration of Uralic speakers. In 2000 a genetic marker was found that proved beyond any doubt that Hungarians were never part of this Uralic migration. In fact they have had no contact with other Uralic speakers for at least 4,000 years. This book explores how views of Hungarian origins reached the state of ignorance that it is today and then examines where the available evidence puts the Magyars origins. For the first time ever evidence is provided that combines the prevailing theories of the west and the east. Hungarian is shown to be an Uralic language as linguists have stated for 150 years and at the same time the Hungarian legends that say Hungarians originated near Persia are also proven to be correct.

DNA evidence is examined to determine the physical origins of the Hungarian people as farmers in the Hindu Kush region. The myths that have evolved regarding Hungarian origins are traced back to their origins. Hungarian pre-Christian religious practices are also examined.

Finally, not just Hungarian but all Uralic languages are shown to be a form of spoken Sanskrit "slang", based not on word inheritance but on the observational qualities of the object. For example, the Hungarian word for shovel, ‘kanál’, is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning to dig, ‘khana,’ and the Hungarian word for hoe, ‘kapa’, is from the Sanskrit word for a cavity or hole, ‘kupa’. A language law is presented that governs how Sanskrit words were adopted into Hungarian. Even the origins of the word ‘Magyar’ itself are presented.

About the Author
Frank Sandor is the youngest of four children born in Canada to Hungarian immigrants. His parents fled Hungary during the 1956 uprising after his father escaped from a Russian POW camp. Frank now lives in Maple Ridge with his wife and son. Frank has always been interested in anthropology, spending many summers in Utah studying its numerous archaeological remains. In his forties Frank combined his love of anthropology with the investigative skills he developed as a peace officer and the analytical skills developed from years of analyzing computer systems, and turned his attention towards the question of Hungarian origins.

Frank Sandor has an Associate Degree in Criminology from Douglas College, as well as having attended both the British Columbia Institute of Technology and Simon Fraser University. Frank is a professional member of the American Anthropological Association as well as a member of the Society for the Anthropology of Europe. Frank's hobbies include traditional archery and he is a member of his local archery club.
