First lets deal with the book. The military information is outdated. Also they took out important parts and added parts from other books to make this book look bigger. The out come is outdated content, a mix of content that will confuse you!
A very poor way to produce a book!
Now look at the reviewer: Floyd Jackson (Oklahoma City, OK) The "first" review; LOOK at all of his reviews 121 of them. All 121 of the reviews are for the publisher of this book Skyhorse Publishing or Lyons same people: I really don't like when someone trys to mislead me with book review, and want to talk me into buying a book becuase of how good it is. This guy has given 121 reviews for the same company, sorry I will not buy anything published by Skyhorse again because of this and this book has a lot of outdated and incomplete information any way!

Lots of good info on a big book

This book is excellent, the information contained is great for any amateur military enthusiast. Of course if you look at it with your 'special forces lens' it may not live up to your expectations. The only things I didn't quite like is that the book is really bulky, which is unavoidable so I'm not really complaining. Also, the figures could be better drawn, but that's just being picky as they're perfectly good to look at. You won't be disappointed with this book.
Btw, you can read the full book online for free (legally), just google FM_21-76. Though is better to read a real book IMHO.

Good book but poorly bound.

I purchased the US Army survival book, new from Amazon, in Sep 2010. I'm very pleased with the contents. However here lies the problem. The book is very poorly bound, and after just one day after I bought it, with light usage, the cover is falling off. I already threw away the box the book came in, so I don't know if I have any recourse.
Amazon.com sent me the book maybe 2 days after I bought it on the 'net, and I'm highly pleased with the speed of service. I don't believe I've ever received something in the mail so fast. My conclusion is that Amazon really takes care of their customers.
Another thing, the book is bound in Canada. Nothing against our Canadian brothers and sisters, but I expected a book based on the US Army survival skills to be at least made in USA.
However, the book is the best I've ever seen for survival technology. It is around 900 pages.

The Little Book of Schiaparelli

Lately there has been a rising interest in Schiaparelli's designs, and this new book is a welcomed addition.
It is a little book as the title implies, but it is well-made and printed on high-quality paper.
The book serves as a concise illustrated introduction to Schiaparelli's design philosophy, but I cannot comment on the text, as I've not started reading it yet.
The book is heavily illustrated with a beautiful mix of archival and contemporary photos showing the garments' beauty and colorfulness.
This is a recommended addition to any fashion library, another highly recommended book is the one recently published by the Metropolitan Museum about Prada and Schiaparelli.

A beautiful little book full of colored photos of some of the most beautiful fashions ever! Elsa Schiaparelli was a genious way before her time. I can't believe I have never heard any of today's stars on the Red Carpet say "I'm wearing vintage Schiaparelli!" I would.
But I'm not a STAR!

I ordered my copy of Presnell's "The Information Literate Historian" ...

I ordered my copy of Presnell's "The Information Literate Historian" which is labeled as the Second Edition (Copyright 2013/2007) and it is a total mess. Apparently whoever did the revisions in the second edition never did any serious editing, because the pages are out of sequence, the chapters are a total jumble and the Table of Contents lists chapters that don't exist (Ex.: Chapter 3). Another reader also mentioned these problems and gave the book a "1-star" rating here on Amazon- and I fully agree with their assessment. The book I ordered was for my course in "Historical Methods" at American Public University and it was purchased through the APU Bookstore. I will let them know of this problem, but this is a warning to anyone else ordering this book- DON'T BUY IT. IT IS A TOTAL MASS OF GIBBERISH. I've never experienced this problem with any book I ordered from from Amazon, but I wanted to let the authorities know that this book should NOT be on their purchase list. I would have given this book "0-stars", but that rating is not available. BUYER BEWARE!! DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.

Check your copy is bound correctly, and not missing pages!

My copy of The Information-Literate Historian is defective. It is missing pages and is bound incorrectly. I was unable to read chapter 2 as all but the first page is missing. It jumps from page 26 to 171 continues to 218 then back to 75 and so on, the rest of the book is messed up too. So basically I have two copies of chapter 7. About the Author

 

Thomas Keenan is currently a Professor in the School of Academic & Liberal Studies, Niagara College in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada.  He is also an adjunct member of the Department of Psychology, Brock University.  He is a developmental psychologist with interests in children’s theory of mind, sarcasm & irony comprehension, and music. 


Subhadra Evans completed her PhD in Developmental Psychology at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. She is currently serving as Associate Professor in the UCLA Pediatric Pain and Palliative Care Program, where she researches the impact of chronic pain on family and social relationships, and the use of mind-body medicine to treat chronic pain. She also teaches courses on Child Development, Health Psychology and Introductory Psychology.

Dr Kevin Crowley is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of South Wales. He has published research papers in a number of areas of child development, including bilingual language and literacy development, and play and learning in the early years.

Leadership explained in a way that can be applied

This is an exceptional book for a leader of any type; beginner to senior executive; and also for those that have not yet realised they are leaders. I believe it to be sound training material and have based my company’s leadership development program on this framework, together with that of Verne Harnish’s The Rockefeller Habits, and Jack Daly’s sales methodologies.

I have studied the theory of leadership at work, at university and in my own time over the past 35 years. It is my generalised observation that the more theoretical the teacher or material; then the more likely it is that an inversely proportional relationship exists between what is being taught and the teacher’s experience in positions of leadership. The same can be said about the ability of heavy theoretical texts and they applicability to the workplace.

Cantwell was an exceptional leader in the Australian Army and his presence in a room is one that gives others a feeling of being near a remarkable person. He was always promoted well ahead of his peers and in 2006 was the first Australian to be promoted on the battlefield to Major General since WW2. He is an experienced leader.

He was also a soldier before being an officer and as I recall reading elsewhere, the youngest sergeant in the Australian Army at one time prior to becoming an officer. You could therefore be forgiven for believing this to have a military focus and application; and you would be wrong. After having recently heard Cantwell speak at the book’s launch at the Australian National University it was clear that his focus is on developing leaders in the private and public sectors. While I am sure his framework of leadership is still applicable to a military audience, it was clear that he has transformed his delivery style to that which meets the needs of a non-military audience.

The book is very easy to read, it is not full of heavy concepts and offers clear advice. Its central tenant is that to be a true leader you must be authentic. Anyone that has worked will benefit from this book because you can immediately relate to the five items in each of the five areas within Cantwell’s leadership framework. This is the case because you will have seen them practised well or practised poorly. This is the book’s strength because we can relate to its words; we can learn from it, and then examine the issues in a deeper way at our current workplace by putting them into practice. It also levels an experienced leader and gives you the opportunity to navel gaze back over your leadership experiences and consider Cantwell’s leadership framework against the way you demonstrate leadership today.

I forecast more to come from Cantwell on leadership; perhaps a program of social media, video casts and Cantwell’s presence on the speaking circuit. It is a must read, a quick read, a clear read and very motivational.

A leadership masterclass from a genuine leader

I was keen to read this book after reading the author's previous work "Exit Wounds" which has a string of well-deserved 5-star reviews. This is a different work, a "how to" guide on leadership, based on Cantwell's 40 years as a leader in the army (he rose from private to 20star general) and in post-disaster recovery. It contains dozens of actionable tips and techniques for both established and aspiring leaders. I especially loved the many examples from the real world, of how to lead. It is an easy read, well laid out and accessible. The book has received outstanding reviews from prominent leaders, and I can see why. I wish I'd had this book when I was learning the business of leadership. Highly recommended.

Thoughtful Leadership Principles

I've never met Major General Cantwell, but after reading his book, I hope to. He offers a well thought out leadership philosophy applicable to any aspiring leader. Being a military leader myself, I hope to apply his insights during my remaining days in uniform. He goes beyond 'generalized leadership theories' and gives tangible examples of principles worth thinking about. Well worth the read.

Divided into two parts, the book examines the theory and practice of rhythm in relation to each other to offer new interpretations of the writings of Renaissance music theorists. In the first part, DeFord presents the theoretical evidence, introduces the manuscript sources and explains the contradictions and ambiguities in tactus theory. The second part uses theory to analyse some of the best known repertories of Renaissance music, including works by Du Fay, Ockeghem, Busnoys, Josquin, Isaac, Palestrina, and Rore, and to shed light on composers' formal and expressive uses of rhythm. DeFord's conclusions have important implications for our understanding of rhythm and for the analysis, editing, and performance of music during the Renaissance period.

About the Author
Ruth DeFord is Professor Emerita of Hunter College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York. Her principal areas of research are the Italian madrigal and canzonetta and music theory of the Renaissance. She has edited the canzoni of Giovanni Ferretti and the canzonettas of Orazio Vecchi for A-R Editions. Her articles have appeared in numerous scholarly journals.
