Fun book of math and physics puzzles

Long out of print, it's finally back. The puzzles start easy and get harder - much harder. They require nothing more than high school math and physics, and lots of outside-the-box thinking. These puzzles were originally collected for an MIT freshman class, but you don't need to pay MIT tuition, or hunt through used book stores any more.

About the Author
Robert D. Gatewood received his Ph.D. in industrial psychology from Purdue University. After accomplishing this, he first worked as a consultant for American Institutes for Research and then joined academia. His first position was as a member of the Department of Management at the Terry College of Business, University of Georgia. As has been indicative of his well planned career, Bob thought that he would stay at Terry for maybe five years because it would only take a few years for a smart person with three liberal arts degrees to get used to business schools and then move on to bigger and better things. Thirty-four years later, he decided that maybe it was time to move on. During these years, Bob climbed the academic ranks from assistant to full professor and pursued an administrative career at Terry as a department chair and associate dean in the College of Business. Bob was also elected to five executive positions, including President, within the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management. In 2005, Bob moved to the Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University as the Director of the Executive MBA Program. In 2008 he moved to Denver, Colorado when his wife Chris became Dean of the Daniels School of Business at the University of Denver. He had the good sense to retire from faculty life at that point. As a consultant, Bob has worked with a number of companies; PPG Industries, Westinghouse, BellSouth, and Ford for example.

Hubert S. Feild earned his Ph.D. in industrial psychology from the University of Georgia. He has been a faculty member in the Department of Management at Auburn University for more than 33 years and is now the Torchmark Professor of Management. His numerous articles have been published in such journals as ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY, and PERSONNEL PSYCHOLOGY. He also has done many projects for companies like SONY, PPG Industries, GE, and AmSouth Bank. A former student athlete, he played baseball at Mississippi State.

Murray Barrick obtained his Ph.D. in industrial and organizational psychology from the University of Akron. He is head of the Department of Management as well as a Distinguished Professor and the Robertson Chair at the Mays Business School at Texas A&M. He previously served as a faculty member at the University of Iowa and Michigan State University. Dr. Barrick's first publication?featured in PERSONNEL PSYCHOLOGY in 1991?was recognized as the most frequently cited article in that journal during the 1990s. More recently, it was reported to be the most highly cited article in industrial psychology between 2001 and 2005. By April 2009, this one article had been cited more than 2,300 times (Google Scholar). Dr. Barrick's awards include the Outstanding Published Paper, the Owens Scholarly Achievement Award, and the 2009 Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, which he won along with Mick Mount. A former associate editor of PERSONNEL PSYCHOLOGY, he serves on the editorial boards of the JOURNAL OF APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY, PERSONNEL PSYCHOLOGY, and JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT. As for hobbies, Dr. Barrick enjoys biking across Iowa on the annual "RAGBRAI" ride. In addition, he has served as a keynote speaker in Pretoria, South Africa, and Melbourne, Australia; conducted tutorial workshops in Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Australia, and New Zealand; and attended the occasional SIOP Conference.

Great learning experience!

Great book! The writing was humorous which made the reading easier to digest. Unlike the typical boring, dry textbook with bolded letters and highlights here and there. In addition to the style of writing, the content was also great. Covered a lot of important material in depth and cited empirical support for arguments/statements. I'm really glad that my professor chose this book!

The book is more entertaining rather than having educational value.

I was hoping this book was a pragmatic, step-by-step guide about how to be a better entrepreneur. It is not. This book tries to motivate 9-5er’s to be entrepreneurs. The book is more entertaining rather than having educational value. I hope this review helps, it was a pretty good book. Reading the book felt like watching TV, but with words. Not very enlightening, and wondering afterwards if this was time well spent.

It was not what I need or was expecting. I need guidance on how to wisely bring on more staff for my startup small business. Sales staff, office staff, book keeping, appointment setters, etc. I need real help to make good decisions. This book is more of a conversational piece for people who want to become entrepreneurs but are not taking the plunge.

Don't pass this one up!

Absolutely, hands down a MUST read if you are an entrepreneur or planning to become one. I was encouraged to read this book from my mentor in Beachbody when I became a coach. Beachbody also promotes SUCCESS magazine, of which Darren Hardy is the CEO. I can't wait to read it again and again. There's so much to learn from it, I want to go back and see what I may have missed.

This book hit points that resonated with me, that made me scream "Yes, that's me!!" Bit it also hit points that made me cringe because it was so truthful. I cringed in fear and gratitude of the information given.

This book is a must-read for any person in a start-up business of any sort, or any home based, self-employed business. Just do it!

About the Author

Agnès Bénassy-Quéré is the Director of the CEPII, the French leading research institute in international economics, and a Professor at University Paris-Ouest (on leave). Benoit Coeuré teaches international economics and economic policy at École polytechnique in Paris. He has served in various official positions in the French government including as the CEO of France's debt management office, Agence France Trésor and as France's deputy deputy to the G-7 and G-20. He has also been the co-President of the Paris Club. Benoît Coeuré has authored articles and books on economic policy, the international monetary system and the economics of European integration.

Since January 2002, Pierre Jacquet has been executive director (in charge of strategy) and chief economist at the French Development Agency (AFD). He was formerly deputy director of the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI) and chief editor of IFRI's quarterly review Politique Etrangère. He is professor of international economics and chairman of the department of economics and finance at the Ecole des Ponts-ParisTech and a guest professor in executive programs at the French business school INSEAD. His fields of interest include globalization, international monetary and financial issues, trade policies and negotiations, economic policy and development.

Jean Pisani-Ferry is the Director of Bruegel, the Brussels-based economic think tank, and a professor of economics with Université Paris-Dauphine. He has had a career in research and policy, both in France and at European level. He has been Executive President of the French PM's Council of Economic Analysis, Senior Economic Adviser to the French Minister of Finance, Director of CEPII, the French institute for international economics, and Economic Adviser with the European Commission. He has a regular column in Le Monde and Handelsblatt.

Great purchase

I am new to the field of economics, and I usually don't like to take the road everyone else takes, I prefer reaching things indirectly.
Instead of buying Mankiw, etc., and those s***ty books, this was a great choice.

This book exists, not in an abstract plane void of any prescriptive and explanatory power, but at the intersection of the State and the domestic economy.

I highly recommend it.

Pretty useful as a handbook reference guide

Pretty useful as a handbook reference guide, but does not go much into depth.

However, it is very well footnoted with lots of good references to read.
