If you already have the first volume and/or are even remotely interested in Wing Chun kung fu, you have GOT to have this book. The two together, cover all the forms of the art. It's a GIANT over-view of the system. Great explanations. Very clearly written text. You won't find yourself re-reading paragraphs for clarity on what the writer meant.

The best book on the system

I have a lot of books on wing chun, this is the best hands down.

Most of the other books I've read are very watered down, offering only a couple of exercises and no real insight. Belonoha's writing is extremely thorough, offering real insight and transmitting the essence of the system.

It is the only book I would recommend to people, the only other thing required is actual practice.

The book is nicely divided into two parts, one on basic physics concepts, the other on several sports. The only thing I missed is a quantitative evaluation of the sports themselves, but this is easily done with the material given. As a physics professor and a book author, I have to hand it to Hay. In his service of numerous clients nationwide, infrastructure expert Rich Schiesser combines the experiences of a senior IT executive, professional educator, acclaimed author, and highly regarded consultant.

 

During the past three decades, Rich has headed up major computer centers at firms as diverse as Hughes Aircraft Company, the City of Los Angeles, and Twentieth Century Fox. For nearly 10 years he managed the primary computer center at Northrop Grumman Corporation, considered at the time to be one of the largest and most advanced in the world.

 

For the past several years, Rich has consulted on designing and implementing world-class infrastructures through his company, RWS Enterprises, Inc. Among his numerous clients are The Weather Channel, Emory Air Freight, Amazon.com, DIRECTV, Las Vegas Police, Option One Mortgage, Lionsgate Entertainment, and St. Joseph Health Systems.

 

Rich has also consulted at a variety of colleges, including Corinthian Colleges, Victor Valley College, Pasadena City College, University of Montana, and Kern County College District. He has taught a variety of IT classes at California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA), the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), and Phoenix University.

 

In addition to writing the first edition of IT Systems Management, Rich coauthored the best-selling book IT Production Services. He has also written more than 200 articles on IT management for leading trade journals and websites, including InformIT.com.

 

Rich holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University, a Master of Science degree from the University of Southern California (USC), and has completed graduate work in business administration from UCLA. I am an IT professional who likes to have a book to read and refer to. This is much more of a classroom book for college that for someone in the workplace. However, if you are a new IT manager and are looking for a reference to compare what you are doing to this would work well. It might even give you ideas for things you aren't doing.

Very informative and helpful. This will chang your life if you use it.

Jose Silva is an intreaguing individual. Here he reveals results of many years of researc into developing the powers of the human mind. Some of this has been updated later with audio cd which is easier to use but these methods are free and easy to learn, compared to the audio program which is much dearer. Silve is not the most brilliant teacher but, being the originator of the Silva Method, I think this is the best place to start to get an inexpensive introduction into Silva meditation which has been taught to 4 million people. It contains a lot in a small book so you will need to read it over a few times to let it sink in. I will keep it as a book to never get rid of, an essential part of my library. The only thing I would point out that is anyone who gets into mind control for 40 years tends to become unconventional. In this case, I just ignore his promotion of reincarnation, which I do not accept, and his encouragement to get help from spirit guides in another dimension. But it is hard, or almost impossible, to find a writer out there I totally agree with in every way. This is a book that will change your view of the power of the human mind. Silva spent a fortune in research and shares it at minimal cost for the development of society. This book is great to help you overcome subconscious blockages that are holding you back in life, use intuition to guide you, get creative help from forces in the universe and use mindpower to help those you love. It is not a book about hypnosis as Silva's research did not find it effective in mind control. Strongly recommended with those reservations.

Absorbing account of the Silva Mind Method for creating the life you desire

The Silva Method is the famous transformational method, whereby we learn to go to a deep meditational state, Alpha, thereby activating the right side of our brain, and by means of visualization/our imagination create the life we desire.

The best, of course, is to take a Silva course, or courses, but I found this book to be extremely readable and helpful.

I took many courses, and read the books, many moons ago. On re-reading this book, I see how the late José Silva was a man way ahead of his time, and in fact a highly developed being and a genius.

José terms this help from the other side, or from God, our “invisible means of support”.

Even back then he knew that the present age is “a period of awakening, of expanded consciousness”. José’s research, courses and books have enabled many millions of people throughout the world to expand their consciousness.

“The Silva Method is a way of relaxing the body and the mind and then using the slowed-down brain-wave frequency and the stepped-up right brain activity to produce some positive result.”

Picturing mentally, that is, using visualization and imagination, is a right-brain activity, and the right brain is “connected” to the other side. José tells us that our mental computer is then connected to a larger computer, and our need is heard, and then filled.

We learn how to count ourselves down into the Alpha state, where our brain waves vibrate between 7 and 14 cycles per second, and are given a series of exercises, whereby we gradually learn to do more and more mental programming.

We are taught to cancel out worry and replace it with positive, solution-oriented thinking. We learn how to programme for dreams that can help us find solutions to our problems.

We pick two counsellors, one male and one female, whom we can consult when engaged in our healing work. These counsellors are in contact with what José terms “Higher Intelligence”, and can answer all our questions. We heal both ourselves and others.

José also teaches us how to programme ourselves to obtain a deeper state of awareness by merely putting the thumb and first two fingers together (the Three Fingers Technique), so we can immediately access Alpha in a waking, Beta, state, when we need to solve pressing problems here and now.

I remember once, years ago, when hurrying from the train and having only a few minutes in which to catch a bus, I had at the same time to buy something necessary from the station kiosk. I came running towards the kiosk, saw there was a long queue there, and placed my fingers in the required position, repeating mentally “Let the queue spread, so I get to be first”. (I know it sounds selfish, but I really needed to buy the item and at the same time catch the bus.) Suddenly, those in the queue seemed to lose focus, some left it, some apparently decided they needed to buy something more and went to get it, and others just turned away slightly. I ran in, and was served first. This technique is really wonderfully helpful, when you’re in a rush or a critical situation.

The book contains chapters on solving people problems, health problems, money problems and complicated problems.

We are taught the invaluable tool of using subjective communication. This is communication between yourself and another party when in Alpha. You relax and imagine you see the person and hold a conversation with him/her in a loving way that suggests a solution to some mutual problem. This communication goes via the sender’s superconscious mind to the receiver’s conscious mind.

I have used subjective communication many times with success, and have also used it successfully when wanting a loan from my bank, which had previously been denied me (even though this was not a “mutual problem”),

You can use subjective communication with your spouse, children, parents, in-laws, employer, fellow workers, law enforcers or friends. Remember to communicate in a loving way.

We learn an important technique called the Glass of Water Technique, which can be used mostly for people problems.

What I have here presented are some of the basic precepts and techniques dealt with in the book. But it contains much, much more than these.

I highly recommend that you read the book, which is clearly and simply written and very readable. José includes several fascinating success stories from his own life and experience, and it is thus in no way a dull book.

This book argues that the Arab states in the Middle East have failed to provide security for their citizens or define themselves along the lines of traditional nation states. Due to continuous war, they have been unable to foster development and prosperity.

The author argues that these failures have led to the development of an Islamic political theory which is based around the non-territorial concepts of the Umma and Dawla. Each concept is explored in detail and the author explains how crucial they are in explaining the difference between Western policy and the priorities and the identity of the Arab world.

This book argues that nationalisms in the Arab Middle East were colonial constructs to legitimize the colonially created nation states. Such states were structured in a manner that guaranteed their behavior as colonies after their independence. There dependence was in fact the condition for their formal independence.

The book contrasts these colonially introduced national identities to the pre colonial Islamic identity the revolved around the concepts of Umma and Dawla. Both concepts have not yet been adequately dealt with in English and have usually been mistranslated into „nation‰ and „state‰ respectively. The Book provides a thorough explanation of these concepts by studying canonical Sunni and Shiite Islamic texts of political theory and jurisprudence. The Book also shows that understanding such concepts might explain how public opinion is formed in the Middle East and how Arab governments gain and loose legitimacy.

Finally the book traces the local elites‚ failed attempts to reconcile the colonially introduced identity that revolves around the colonially created nation state and the native culture that sets political allegiance in the whole Muslim community. Such a failure allowed the Dawla, a non-territorial, non-sovereign form of organization whose allegiance lies with the whole Muslim Umma, to reemerge as a means of social, political in sometimes military, form of organization, thus the variety of non state Islamic actors throughout the region.

This unique book should be required reading for students of Middle East international relations and Islamic political theory.

He is the author of Benign Nationalism: Egyptian Nation State Building under Occupation (2007). He studied at Boston University, USA, and the American University in Cairo. unnecessarily hard to read style

I tried, I really did, to read this book but it's just too.. "look at me I know how to make long sentences" kind of style. It's not a novel it's supposed to a book where content is king. Author: next time you write a book about facts, just lay down the facts and then the conslusion. cut the fat.

Over 350 fine line drawings illustrate every item used in the rigging. Hard-To-Find Information Now At The Tip of Your Fingers

In another review, I said that one needed 3 books as a foundation for the hobby of model ship building. Oops, I was wrong. This is number 4!
Since I'm building a model of the Mayflower (1620), this is the book that has all the answers for all the questions I have. From mast tapering, angles, and length, to rigging hints and methods. This is the square riggers handbook. There is a ton of information, yes covering 1600-1625 period ships. Although there is more for the later part of the title, not to fear, the early part of the title is very well covered.
Despite the hard to read (and messy) illustrations, and weak reductions of original materials, the content of the book requires it get a 5-star rating. Even the dated language doesn't matter. Move past that, and the knowledge is abundant.
If you're not a modeler, and a fan of square rigged sailing vessels, then this is the book to learn how they operated. Very thorough in it's coverage of all the aspects of the vessel's rigging. You can almost feel the ropes in your hands.
So I'm sorry to say, you'll need this book too in your collection... Don't delay.....

Are you interested in all aspects of Square Rigged Ships?

This book is actually written by and for model ship builders. I gave it a 5 star rating because of the difficulty finding information of this nature. It is somewhat dry reading, but the diagrams are for the most part clear. Some of the whole ship detailed drawings, lost something in the reduction and are difficult to read. Much of the information here came from the authors detailed study of the St George model as well as impossible to find rare book references from the late 1600's.
I love every aspect of sailing and I'm particularly interested in learning whatever I can about how ship- rigged boats were actually rigged. This book provides some great information on the terminology of the complicated rigging of these vessels, as well as some of the construction details of the spars. In it you will find information on spars, proportions of the same, standing rigging, and running rigging, and the spirtsail topmast (which went out of use after 1720). If you are interested in learning everything you can about square-rigged ships, this is one of the few references still in print. Buy one while you still can. I am very happy with the book. Because of the rarity of the information presented here it will not be the sort of book I would loan out.
